From what I read, Luther wasn't too keen on seeing sacraments as divine saving powers/gifts, dispensable by the clerical class alone.

Teaching scripture and encouraging a direct trust relationship with Christ, I think, were higher priorities in his pastoral approach.

Hard to discern what is core and what is peripheral.
